  1. Well, if keeping records of all my emails and phone calls for a year isn’t “surveillance”, then I don’t know what is! I want to know how they are going to catch someone in the name of terrorism. Will there be words that flag up interest? Will we have to be careful not to say “bomb, shoelaces, woods, High Wycombe, Muslim, Jihad, for the greater cause”, etc., etc.?

And how do we know the government won’t see fit to sell our details on to the highest bidders? Do the DVLA know what data protection is? Or is it okay for government departments not to worry about my details, but companies can get threatened with all sorts if they happen to leave my details lying around?

What about CCTV? How depressing it is to learn that apparently only 3% of crime is solved using CCTV. So why do we have them, up and down every street, every corner, watching, filming, prying?

Sorry, Charon, Sir… didn’t mean to drag my soapbox into your blog… I’ll be off now! :D

  2. Sometimes, I guess, great minds think alike … and then, sometimes, I get lucky and join the party :)

I’ve just spent far too long writing about this very topic. I was concerned enough when it was just cameras popping up all over the place. At least that was surveillance in public. Now it’s overt surveillance of our private communications too. God only knows what surveillance we don’t know about … I’m not even sure I want to know!
